Peaches from Ontario, swiss chard from the garden and water from the tap.
Does everyone love peaches as much as I do? They are so good. So juicy. Fresh Ontario peaches are one of my favorite things about the month of August. The season doesn’t last long so make sure you get out there and buy some peaches.
Does everyone love swiss chard as much as I do? Somehow I don’t think as many of you will be answering yes to that question. That’s ok. The more you use chard the more it will grow on you. The same goes for the rest of the leafy greens.
I spent the night at my parents house last night and therefore don’t have my vita-mix to make a green smoothie this morning. Although I do have a garden overflowing with beautiful swiss chard so there is no way I wasn’t takking advantage of that. So I took out my old 35$ osterizer blender from my university days.
A perfect opportunity for a little experiment. See how well this old/cheap blender handles some greens. I know that not everybody is going to go out and buy a vita-mix but that doesn’t mean you can’t make yourself a delicious green smoothie with the blender you have at home. Friends of mine have even made green smoothies successfully in their magic bullets.
The less fibrous greens such as swiss chard, spinach, romaine, parsley are very easily blended. The one I am hesitant about is kale. It is harder to blend. If you do want to try kale in a regular blender I suggest you massage the leaves for a few minutes first to soften them up.
When using my vita-mix I throw the whole leaf in, stem included. Today I simply removed the leaf from the rib which is harder to blend.
How many of you have actually ever tried a green smoothie? How many of you have ever tried making a green smoothie at home?

This is an incredibly simple green smoothie yet absolutely delicious. It is very easy to overpower the subtle peach flavour in a smoothie if you put a lot of ingredients. My goal was to keep it simple so you could still taste the peaches. Mission accomplished. Enjoy.
Peach and Swiss Chard Green Smoothie
3 peaches, pitted
1 cup swiss chard, packed (5 smallish leaves for me)
1/2 cup water
2-3 ice cubes
Blend until smooth.
Makes approximately 2 1/2 cups
