My parents and I took a little road trip on Sunday to visit my cousin in Vermont. A beautiful Sunday drive through the mountains. We ate lunch at The Skinny Pancake in Montpellier, Vermont, a pretty funky and delicious restaurant. They have a second location in Burlington as well as a food cart and trailer.
The Skinny Pancake is a crêpe restaurant that focuses on local and affordable food. “The Skinny Pancake is on a mission to change the world by building a safer, healthier and more delicious food shed. At the same time they are creating everyday enjoyment that is fun and affordable” .
It is not a vegan or vegetarian restaurant, but definitely caters to everyones needs. They have vegan as well as gluten free options. All their gluten-free crêpes use their vegan crepe batter made from chickpea flour, oil and water. All the meat and cheese used is from small local producers. So if you do eat animal products, you can be sure you are getting top quality at The Skinny Pancake.
The atmosphere is warm and fun, and the staff is helpful and friendly. The menu is on a chalkboard and is quite extensive. My first time there, so it took me a few minutes to read and take it all in.
A wide variety of sweet and savoury crêpes. Great for breakfast, brunch, dinner, and dessert. A variety of sides and specials including soup, chilli, etc. All worth giving a try. The Skinny Pancake does not just offer crepes. They have something for everyone.
They even have live music. Unfortunately the live music wasn’t until 6 pm that day, but I can only imagine I would have loved it.
I enjoyed my Vegan Monster crêpe. House made Seitan. Impressive. Baby spinach, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, and basil-sunflower pesto. Yummy.
Sunday afternoon lunch in Vermont with my family. Perfect time for a pint. How could I not? The Skinny Pancake offers a selection of several different local beers. I had never tried or even heard of any of the beers featured so I asked for a recommendation. Heady Topper, an unfiltered double IPA sounded like a good choice. Description on the site… “Is our double I.P.A.! Loaded with hops, this one will put hair on your chest.” Made by The Alchemist.
This is one of the best beers I have had in a long time. Very hoppy, meaning people who don’t really like beer probably won’t like it, but absolutely delicious. Full of flavour.
The back of the can reads ” Don’t be a D-Bag, Recycle this can”
The crêpe came with a very simple green salad. This is exactly the type of salad I want as a side at every restaurant. Mixed greens with a simple dressing. Delicious. A salad you actually want to eat.
We shared both the sweet potato and russet fries. By far the best fries I have had in along time. I don’t tend to eat french fries too often, but these are made fresh with local potatoes, so it seemed like a good time to indulge. These sweet potato fries were absolutely perfect.
The tables at The Skinny Pancake definitely add the ‘what is special about this restaurant’. Beautiful wooden tables and benches give the room its character.
I don’t think my family and I could have been more pleased with our visit to “The Skinny Pancake”. Great food, in a great environment, at an affordable price, and all prepared with the environment in mind. Oh ya, don’t forget the amazing beer.
All I can say is that I wish there was a Skinny Pancake here in Montreal. I would be there regularly. I hope to return one day, hopefully for some live music and to try their other beer and delicious menu offerings.
