Grow Your Yoga Week #4: Reach Out

Reach Out- It’s all about Karma yoga….using our creativity and our sense of community to support others.

So what does reaching out mean to you? There are so many ways that you can help make a difference. For me it means: taking time to help someone, taking time to call someone and say hello, getting involved with a charity…along with countless other possibilities.

A year ago my sister told me about a charity called Blessings in a Backpack. It’s a unique program designed to support schoolchildren who simply do not have enough to eat on weekends. Kids take home a backpack filled with food every Friday and return the backpack empty on Mondays – ready to start their week.

How does this simple act help? The benefits and impact are immediately evident.  Attendance and productivity soar; students report greater attentiveness and improved energy; teachers see improvements in study habits and demeanour; parents feel relief and support for their own family. Above all, communities grow and lives are changed. 100% of every donation is directed towards the program.

Learning about this wonderful charity led me to think that if everyone took a little more ownership in terms of taking care of their own community, the world would be a better place.  :)

Moksha Yoga hosts Karma classes every Friday. All the money raised goes to various designated charities all over the world. With over 65 studios committed to hosting multiple weekly Karma classes, I truly believe that we make a difference. I saw an opportunity to use these classes to help get involved with Blessings in a Backpack.

I immediately started calling elementary schools within Montreal and found a great school, with many students who needed some extra help. I approached the owners of Moksha Montreal, Moksha NDG, and Moksha West Island. They were all on board to help. We now help feed over 40 kids, and are continually trying to expand our reach. Every two weeks, I buy groceries for the kids and bring them to the school. Volunteers fill up the backpacks for the kids to take home over the weekend. I am so proud of this charity.

On June 1st, Moksha Montreal, Moksha NDG, and Moksha West Island will offer a full day of Karma classes. Each class participant will be asked to leave a minimum of five dollars donation. In addition, June 29th we will host three yoga classes in surrounding parks near each studio. We are doing this to sustain our involvement in the current elementary school, and to branch out to help other schools. So how about we all make an effort to REACH OUT this week and get involved with a charity! Lets get together and make the world a better place!!

Lots of Love,
