Most of you know I am big on smoothies. I have featured a lot of smoothie recipes here, as well as leading the Health is Happiness 30 Day Smoothie Challenge. I have been asked lots of questions about juicing in the past year.

Today I am happy to have Alison Smith, of alisonsmith.com, to share some info on How To Start Juicing. Hopefully this helps answer any questions you have about juicing and inspires you to start juicing.


Fall is here. The leaves are turning red, yellow and orange; the trees are slowly saying farewell to the bright and sunny summer. It’s now time for them to prepare for winter, and it’s time for us to prepare for the onslaught of snotty noses and hacking coughs.

Welcome to winter boys and girls. I wave a giant box of Kleenex in the air to salute you!

I’m a city dweller, a transit taker: my body is pressed up against any number of fellow citizens every time I venture onto the subway, buses or streetcars.

And, what does all of this forced intimacy mean, as we head into yet another winter wonderland season? You guessed it: flu, sniffles, colds and winter blues.

Don’t get me wrong. I love the winter. It’s a season of big socks, puffy down coats, wood burning stoves scenting the air, hot chocolate, pots of tea, and crisp walks though the forest. But with wintery magic comes the icky reality of catching at least one cold.

I was a cesspool of sickness as a child. Every winter my body was on a mission to make sure that I suffered from strep throat at least twice during the Christmas season (thanks for the gift, Winter!). And, it totally sucked!

Now, you might be thinking, ‘but it’s winter…of course getting slovenly sick is normal; in fact, it’s tradition!’ And, who wants to mess with tradition?

Well, I do! I want to mess with tradition! And, if you’re in the same boat as me, I’m going to let you in on a secret: there is something that you can do for yourself; something that will kickstart your immune system all throughout the blizzardy, wind-swept winter. And, it will let you say bye-bye to body aches and sweaty fevers.

 The secret is: juicing.

Plain and simple, drinking one fresh, gorgeous veggie and fruit juice each day, fortifies your immune system and allows your killer t-cells to obliterate snowbound sickness. Because you know what…winter is for skiing down powdery slops and snuggling up against the one you love. Winter is definitely not a welcome mat for the invasion of body snatching germs. No way!

Like a bio-dome of protection, body rockin’ nutrients found in fresh juices put up a fortress inside your body that safeguards you from the super-sick zombie-like characters surrounding you on public transit.

Jumping into the wild and wacky world of juicing can be quite intimidating for some people. There are just so many darn choices when it comes to purchasing a juicer. And, it’s incredibly easy to accidentally make a juice that tastes more like a horrific medicine rather than a tasty treat.

Essentially, when you’re ready to blast your body with booty-shakin’ nutrients, and you don’t have a juice recipe, it’s always best to choose one leafy green, one juicy base, one or two sweet veggies or fruits, and one optional oomph ingredient (if you’re feeling extra adventurous).

  1. You’ve inspired me to charge up the stairs, fir up the juice machine, and get some oomph out of the celery, carrots, and lemons I have waiting in the crisper. Now, I almost can not wait for the winter’s first blizzard.
