It’s not everyday you see fennel this beautiful. Fennel with big beautiful greenery still attached. Fennel the way it should be. At supermarkets the fennel greens have always been removed,( the same as when you buy beets or carrots). What a shame! So where do you find fennel with its greenery still intact ? Why, I never thought you would ask! You are more likely to find some at an organic food store or farmers market.
While most people have never consumed fennel leaves and would never think of it, in many cultures, fennel leaves are quite commonly used in cooking. Probably not so much in green smoothies but they are used to add anise flavour to cooked dishes such as pasta and fish as well as chopped raw into salads etc. The good news is they also taste great in green smoothies. I have decided to give my system a little break this week, a cleanse of sorts. I am not changing my diet drastically from my normal day to day routine but am simply being more a little more disciplined and conscious of what I eat. This means cutting certain things out all together for 7 days.
The main things I am cutting out completely are alcohol and caffeine. Both alcohol and caffeine are quite demanding on our systems. I don’t drink coffee, but I have found myself drinking black tea more often then I want to be recently. I also have been wanting to do a week without alcohol for a while now, something I find is hard to do unless you really commit to it. Which is what I am doing by sharing it with everybody here. I really think that it will be a nice break for my system and am expecting it to boost my productivity and energy levels. Continue reading →

Since the new year I have been making a conscious effort to experiment more with my smoothies. This goes for my green smoothies as well as my non green smoothies. I have been doing my best to keep track of them all. Working on tweaking the recipes and making them the best they can be, sharing my favourites here on Health is Happiness. What does this mean? It means I will be sharing quite a few smoothie recipes here on the blog in the weeks and months to come. I will be sure to keep posting delicious non-smoothie recipes as well. Hopefully I can inspire a few more people to give heathy smoothies a try. Quite a few people have been telling me recently that they tried making a green smoothie for the first time and loved it. This makes me very happy.
I am enjoying experimenting with all these new smoothies, finding out what I like and what I don’t. The reason I committed myself to doing this is that I was into the routine of making the same smoothies most of the time. Don’t get me wrong, I love the smoothies I was making and am not going to stop making them. My go to greens are still kale, swiss chard, and spinach, as well as collard greens, when I can find them. The fruit I use most are strawberries and bananas. I am going to try and switch it up and mix different greens with different fruit.
The beginning of a new year is a great time for a greens detox. A great way to do this is by drinking cleansing green smoothies. Many of us ate more over the holidays than we usually do. After all, isn’t that what the holidays are all about? I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday, and shared some great food with family and friends.
It is nice to give our systems a break since overeating can be hard on our body. Overeating slows down our system, which means slower elimination and natural detoxification. A greens detox with cleansing green smoothies is a great way to help our bodies with its natural detoxification process and give it the break it needs. Time to rejuvenate for the new year. Many of us have New Year’s resolutions to change the way we eat, and to work at having better health and weight loss goals. An easy as well as beneficial way to help you achieve your goals, is incorporating cleansing green smoothies into your diet.
Not to worry. I am not saying that you have to go on some crazy cleanse and replace all solid food with smoothies. I am just encouraging you to drink a (green) smoothie a day. Green smoothies are easy to digest, making it easier to absorb the nutrients they contain. And boy do they ever contain a lot.
This cleansing green smoothie recipe contains several ingredients to help your body recover and rejuvenate itself for the new year ahead.
Happy New Year to everyone. I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays. January 2nd means back to work and back to reality for many of us. Whether your New Year’s resolution involves changing your diet and lifestyle to improve your health, or not, you will love this smoothie. It is healthy as well as a treat for your taste buds. Really, it is amazing. Start the new year off right with this “sun kiss” smoothie.
This creamy, sweet and refreshing smoothie is made with mango, orange, lemon, cashews, vanilla and water. It is our version of a smoothie they make at Crudessence here in Montreal called the Sun Kiss smoothie. I personally have never tried it at the restaurant, but it is one that Natalie has tried and loves. After having made our own version of it I understand why.
It is ridiculously good. Honestly. It really is like a glass full of smiles. This is great in the winter as well as in the summer. Give our version a try as well as the original Sun Kiss smoothie at Crudessence, if you live in Montreal. I will definitely be giving their version a try in the near future.
The citrus blast from the orange and lemon combined with the sweet mango, the creaminess of the cashews, and the beautiful real vanilla flavour is magical. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face. We used a yellow mango. Make sure the mango is sweet. This can definitely make or break your smoothie.
Watch the video of Nathalie and I making the smoothie below. We had a blast making this video, and I certainly enjoyed the fruits of our labor. I hope you enjoy the video, and that you give this smoothie a try.
Let me know if you give this a try and what you think. Don’t forget to subscribe to my youtube channel to stay updated on all the new Health is Happiness videos. Many more to come in the new year.

The gym used to be a huge part of my life. From the age of 17-27 I went to the gym religiously several times a week, and I loved it. I couldn’t imagine my life without the gym. Going to the gym wasn’t something I had to force myself to do, it was something I did with pleasure, because it made me feel great.
Then, I discovered yoga. Over the past 2 years, yoga seems to have taken over from the gym. During the first year I was practicing yoga I still went to the gym on and off, but yoga changed the way I felt about the gym and it slowly started to take over.
The last time I went to a gym was over a year ago, and then today I went back. I had stopped going completely after breaking my elbow, and then going back too soon for my elbow, which was still giving me pain in the gym. When I tried to go back to the gym, I could still feel pain in my elbow so decided to give it more time. During this time yoga became an even bigger part of my life, and now I couldn’t imagine my life without yoga. Community is a very important part of life. Surrounding yourself with like minded people who share many of the same values as you is really nice.
Papaya isn’t something that I have eaten much of in my life. The last time I bought papaya, it wasn’t good, which I think turned me off. What made me decide to give it a try again? About 2 weeks ago I tried a smoothie at the Yoga studio with papaya in it, and it was delicious.
The next time I was at the market, I picked up a papaya, and decided to give it another chance. I made sure to let it ripen completely, which I think might have been the problem the last time I tried papaya. Not quite ripe. Yuck.
Once the papaya was ripe, I cut it open and removed the interesting looking seeds inside and scooped out all the flesh. Pretty good actually, and even better in a green smoothie.
My friend, Nathalie, who happens to be one of my favourite yoga teachers, just returned from a yoga training in Costa Rica where she stayed at The Harmony Hotel. Nat and I are always talking and sharing juices and smoothies. I walked into the studio and was greeted by Nat. She extended one arm out over the reception desk, mason jar in hand. “Kieran, you need to try this”. It was a smoothie she had discovered at The Juice Bar at at the Harmony Hotel.
After checking out their website a little bit I can safely say The Harmony Hotel in Costa Rica is my kinda place. It pretty much sounds like paradise. Eat. Sleep. Relax. Play. “They say The Harmony Hotel is the perfect place to get in tune with your natural rhythm.” Yes please.
If this smoothie is the type of fare they are serving up at The Harmony Hotel in Costa Rica, then I would be more than happy to eat there. I can only imagine what other amazing food and drink they have to offer. Local, seasonal food. 80% of the foods served at their Juice Bar are from their very own farm. Now that is fresh at its best.
I have made smoothies similar to this one in the past but not with coconut milk and coconut water. There are so many amazing different combinations you could come up with. Raw cacao truly is amazing. It is so good and so good for you. If you didn’t know, now you know. Raw cacao can be very expensive to buy, but if you are lucky enough to live in the US you can get a great deal on amazon.
Banana Nut Butter Smoothie
3/4 cup coconut milk
2 tablespoons raw cacao nibs
1/4 cup almond butter (raw if possible)
1/4 coconut water
1 cup ice cubes
dates to to sweeten (amount will depend on type of dates used and personal taste)
1 medjool date should be enough
Combine all the ingredients together in a blender and blend until almost smooth but still a little crunchy. Do not over blend.
Enjoy the sweet rich goodness.

If you are anything like me, you always have apples around in the kitchen at this time of year. If you don’t you should ,because it’s apple season. Apple are great for making green smoothies. We all know apples are great fruits to bring with us as snacks, but why not try something different. There are so many different uses for apples in the kitchen. One of my favourites from childhood to this day is apple crisp. If you missed it, check out my recent vegan cranberry apple pecan crisp recipe.
This is one recipe for an apple green smoothie, but I encourage you to experiment with different combinations of other fruits and greens. I don’t peel the apples when blending them because I use a Vitamix, but if you don’t have a high powered blender, I would recommend peeling the apples before blending them. Continue reading →
