Shaping Up For Summer Part 2

Tala is back with another workout to help get us in better shape for summer. If you missed her first workout check it out here.

Personally, I never feel better than when I have worked out and had a healthy smoothie. It makes me feel like I am on top of the world. I hope you guys are feeling like that too! Tala is here to help.

If you haven’t done much exercise recently there is no better time than spring to get up, get out and get moving!

Getting In Shape For Summer Part 2 by Tala

An important rule in fitness is to keep your body guessing when you are trying to get results. The body is really great at adapting, so it’s important to change up your workouts and keep challenging yourself. It’s not supposed to get easier, you’re just getting stronger!

This workout can be considered a ‘Day 2’ to the previous circuit that was posted. So you can get a different workout on each day! Or if you are looking to switch it up, and don’t have the time to incorporate a workout on each day, change it up with this new circuit I developed.

The videos were shot at the Mansfield Athletic Club in downtown Montreal in their beautiful Trinity Room. Although you can’t see it, the entire ceiling is a skylight!

Remember that a refreshing smoothie goes down really well after a workout ☺

If you love hummus, and have never tried making it at home, now is the time to try. It is incredibly simple, easy, and quick. You can start with a basic hummus recipe or even the recipe I am sharing here with you today which is sun-dried tomato, basil hummus with roasted garlic.

Hummus is a traditional Lebanese appetizer (mezze) that has become very popular here in North America. I am convinced that when I was growing up hummus wasn’t nearly as popular. Why do I think this? Mango Orange Lemon Cashew Vanilla Smoothie Inspired by Crudessence

Happy New Year to everyone. I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays. January 2nd means back to work and back to reality for many of us. Whether your New Year’s resolution involves changing your diet and lifestyle to improve your health, or not, you will love this smoothie. It is healthy as well as a treat for your taste buds. Really, it is amazing. Start the new year off right with this “sun kiss” smoothie.

This creamy, sweet and refreshing smoothie is made with mango, orange, lemon, cashews, vanilla and water. It is our version of a smoothie they make at Crudessence here in Montreal called the Sun Kiss smoothie. I personally have never tried it at the restaurant, but it is one that Natalie has tried and loves. After having made our own version of it I understand why.

It is ridiculously good. Honestly. It really is like a glass full of smiles. This is great in the winter as well as in the summer. Give our version a try as well as the original Sun Kiss smoothie at Crudessence, if you live in Montreal. I will definitely be giving their version a try in the near future.

The citrus blast from the orange and lemon combined with the sweet mango, the creaminess of the cashews, and the beautiful real vanilla flavour is magical. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face. We used a yellow mango. Make sure the mango is sweet. This can definitely make or break your smoothie.

“Sun Kiss Smoothie” Recipe

1 orange
1 mango
juice of 1 lemon (about a 1/4 cup)
1/4 cup cashews, soaked for 30 mins
1/2 vanilla pod, or 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup water

Combine in an upright blender and blend until smooth. Adjust amount of water until desired consistency is obtained.

Banana Nut Butter Smoothie from The Harmony Hotel in Costa Rica

My friend, Nathalie, who happens to be one of my favourite yoga teachers, just returned from a yoga training in Costa Rica where she stayed at The Harmony Hotel. Nat and I are always talking and sharing juices and smoothies. I walked into the studio and was greeted by Nat. She extended one arm out over the reception desk, mason jar in hand. “Kieran, you need to try this”. It was a smoothie she had discovered at The Juice Bar at at the Harmony Hotel.

After checking out their website a little bit I can safely say The Harmony Hotel in Costa Rica is my kinda place. It pretty much sounds like paradise. Eat. Sleep. Relax. Play. “They say The Harmony Hotel is the perfect place to get in tune with your natural rhythm.” Yes please.

If this smoothie is the type of fare they are serving up at The Harmony Hotel in Costa Rica, then I would be more than happy to eat there. I can only imagine what other amazing food and drink they have to offer. Local, seasonal food. 80% of the foods served at their Juice Bar are from their very own farm. Now that is fresh at its best.

More about the smoothie at hand. I don’t know how close this is to the exact recipe they use at The Harmony Hotel Juice Bar but it is Nat’s version inspired by her amazing experience. It contains raw cacao nibs, banana, coconut milk, coconut water, dates, and raw almond butter.

I have made smoothies similar to this one in the past but not with coconut milk and coconut water. There are so many amazing different combinations you could come up with. Raw cacao truly is amazing. It is so good and so good for you. If you didn’t know, now you know. Raw cacao can be very expensive to buy, but if you are lucky enough to live in the US you can get a great deal on amazon.

Banana Nut Butter Smoothie

3/4 cup coconut milk
1 banana
2 tablespoons raw cacao nibs
1/4 cup almond butter (raw if possible)
1/4 coconut water
1 cup ice cubes

dates to to sweeten (amount will depend on type of dates used and personal taste)
1 medjool date should be enough

Combine all the ingredients together in a blender and blend until almost smooth but still a little crunchy. Do not over blend.

Enjoy the sweet rich goodness.

Vegan Hot Chocolate Recipe & Video

Hot chocolate is a comforting drink that can be a great treat on cold winter evenings.  This beverage can either be extremely processed, artificial and unhealthy, or natural and healthy. It all depends on the ingredients you use.  The choice is yours.  It is just as easy to make the healthy vegan hot chocolate, so give it a try.

Forget about those hot chocolate pre mixed packages filled with artificial flavouring, corn syrup and more.  So many ingredients. So unnecessary.  Listed below are the ingredients of Nestle’s Hot Chocolate mix found on their website .

Ingredients

SUGAR, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL (MAY CONTAIN COCONUT, PALM KERNEL AND/OR SOYBEAN OIL), MODIFIED MILK INGREDIENTS, COCOA, CELLULOSE GUM, SALT, DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, SILICON DIOXIDE, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOUR, MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES, GUAR GUM, SODIUM ALUMINUM SILICATE.

Hydrogenated vegetable oil?  No thank you. Not in my hot chocolate. Would you like any in yours?

Only 3 ingredients necessary for my delicious hot chocolate.  Milk of choice, raw cacao powder and a natural sweetener.

How To Do A Quick 10 Minute Workout

In this video Dave from Training Mobs breaks down a quick and simple 10 minute workout that you can do anywhere anytime. The workout involves 3 basic exercises. Burpees, lunges, and sit-ups. This workout is guaranteed to challenge everybody because it makes you do as much as you can in 10 minutes.

10 minutes and your workout is done, and I promise you will be sweating and out of breath. Unless you are superman. So give it a try.

Video: Discovering Green Smoothies @ Moksha NDG

The best part of making green smoothies to kick of the 7 week Living You Moksha challenge at Moksha Yoga NDG was seeing how people who had never tried a green smoothie before reacted.

The majority of the people who came for a smoothie after their yoga class had never tried a green smoothie before and were very curious. I would also say that the majority of the people that tried it liked it. I was very pleased to see this.

So many people have negative thoughts about green smoothies mostly because of their colour. Guess what? They are green! What a surprise. Despite their appearance, which doesn’t bother me one bit now that I am used to it, most people who try a green smoothie are surprised to find out that they like it. It tastes delicious. Yes, some can be sweeter than others and some can taste very green. Be sure to start with a well balanced green smoothie.

So if you are someone who hasn’t tried a green smoothie because they are afraid of how they look let this inspire you to push yourself to try one.

If  you are someone who wants to have more energy, lose weight, feel more alert or simply make a healthy change to your diet then I urge you to consider trying a green smoothies and if you like it, try  incorporating it into your daily routine.

Second video in my “What is a smoothie?” series. In this video, Erik, Moksha Yoga teacher, talk about how he discovered green smoothies and what he thinks about them.

This video was taken on the first day of the Living Your Moksha challenge at Moksha Yoga NDG when Nat and I made 40 litres of green smoothie to kick off the the challenge.

What is a smoothie?  There are endless different ingredients that can come together to make delicious and nutritious smoothies.

In this first instalment of my “what is a smoothie” series I show you how to make a creamy mango cashew maca smoothie.

I made this smoothie because I wanted a smoothie where I could really taste the mango. I love mango and sometimes their amazing tastes gets lots in my green smoothies.

1/4 cup cashews
1 mango
