Superfood Recipe: Apple, Cinnamon, Goji Berry Oatmeal with Oat Groats

When I take the time to make oatmeal for breakfast it really makes me feel I am getting a great start to the day. It makes me feel great. Having a good breakfast is very important to me, mentally and physically. Oatmeal is great, because it is good for you, easy to make, and you can add so many different flavours. When I say oatmeal, I really should say porridge, because I don’t always make it with oats. Sometimes I will add quinoa, amaranth, spelt or kamut. This opens up a whole bunch of other possibilities and variety to your breakfast.

My go to are either steel cut oats, or whole oat groats. Whole oat groats are less common, but they can be found at most health food stores or places that sell grains in bulk, or ‘en vrac’ as we say in Quebec. Whole oat groats are just what they sound like, the whole oat. They do take a lot longer to cook, but with the method I am about to share with you they will take the same amount of time as steel cut oats in the morning. Continue reading

Chia Fresca: Iskiate


Warning. Drinking this delicious and simple beverage is good for your health and may make you feel great and increase your daily productivity.

I discovered this delicious and healthful drink by reading the incredible book called Born to Run by Christopher McDougall.  This is my version of the chia drink that the Tarahumara tribe would drink to keep them energized during their 50 mile+ runs.  I say my version because I am not quite sure exactly how they prepared it.

I think it will be good enough to keep you going during your everyday life.

 

Just to mention a few of the positive things about chia seeds.  A great plant based source of protein, omega 3s, fibre, and antioxidants.  All in one little seed.

Mix it with some water, lemon or lime juice, and natural sweetener and you have yourself one SUPER drink.
