As life gets busier, too often the first sacrifice made is the very thing that keeps us going throughout the day: fuel (commonly known as food). We opt for quick fixes like takeout, processed foods, snack food or nutritionally incomplete snacks to fill in the gaps between meals. Sometimes these options will even replace our meals! There has to be a better way, right? Right!

Instead of advising that you take time to prepare each of your meals, let us suggest the healthiest quick fix that you can possibly fit into your life: smoothies. Smoothies have limitless potential! Fruit smoothies, green smoothies, chocolate-banana smoothies, breakfast smoothies, midday snack smoothies, dessert smoothies, superfood smoothies, pre-workout smoothies, post-workout smoothies, meal replacing smoothies… this list goes on! Packed with fresh and delicious nutrients, smoothies make you the artist and your blender the blank canvas.

During your 30-day challenge, try making one of our favourites, the Doux-vert. If you’re having trouble convincing your child (or spouse) to eat their greens, this smoothie just may be the solution. Spinach lovers and haters alike will reunite around the metaphorical water cooler and rave about this Crudessence classic!

Stop by one of our restaurants this spring and let us make you your favourite smoothie!

Enjoy!

Spiced Tropical Fruit Superfood Smoothie

Stop what you are doing. Right now. Go make this smoothie. Seriously. I love the flavour of the cardamom with the mango, and orange. Not to mention the creaminess that the hemp seeds bring.

Are you wondering what maca is? I didn’t know about it either until about two years ago when I read the Thrive by Brendan Brazier. That was the book that really got me into whole food plant based eating. I discovered a whole bunch of delicious foods thanks to Brendan.

What is Maca? Continue reading

Mango Orange Lemon Cashew Vanilla Smoothie Inspired by Crudessence

Happy New Year to everyone. I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays. January 2nd means back to work and back to reality for many of us. Whether your New Year’s resolution involves changing your diet and lifestyle to improve your health, or not, you will love this smoothie. It is healthy as well as a treat for your taste buds. Really, it is amazing. Start the new year off right with this “sun kiss” smoothie.

This creamy, sweet and refreshing smoothie is made with mango, orange, lemon, cashews, vanilla and water. It is our version of a smoothie they make at Crudessence here in Montreal called the Sun Kiss smoothie. I personally have never tried it at the restaurant, but it is one that Natalie has tried and loves. After having made our own version of it I understand why.

It is ridiculously good. Honestly. It really is like a glass full of smiles. This is great in the winter as well as in the summer. Give our version a try as well as the original Sun Kiss smoothie at Crudessence, if you live in Montreal. I will definitely be giving their version a try in the near future.

The citrus blast from the orange and lemon combined with the sweet mango, the creaminess of the cashews, and the beautiful real vanilla flavour is magical. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face. We used a yellow mango. Make sure the mango is sweet. This can definitely make or break your smoothie.

Watch the video of Nathalie and I making the smoothie below. We had a blast making this video, and I certainly enjoyed the fruits of our labor. I hope you enjoy the video, and that you give this smoothie a try.

Let me know if you give this a try and what you think. Don’t forget to subscribe to my youtube channel to stay updated on all the new Health is Happiness videos. Many more to come in the new year.

“Sun Kiss Smoothie” Recipe

1 orange
1 mango
juice of 1 lemon (about a 1/4 cup)
1/4 cup cashews, soaked for 30 mins
1/2 vanilla pod, or 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup water

Combine in an upright blender and blend until smooth. Adjust amount of water until desired consistency is obtained.

Banana Nut Butter Smoothie from The Harmony Hotel in Costa Rica

My friend, Nathalie, who happens to be one of my favourite yoga teachers, just returned from a yoga training in Costa Rica where she stayed at The Harmony Hotel. Nat and I are always talking and sharing juices and smoothies. I walked into the studio and was greeted by Nat. She extended one arm out over the reception desk, mason jar in hand. “Kieran, you need to try this”. It was a smoothie she had discovered at The Juice Bar at at the Harmony Hotel.

After checking out their website a little bit I can safely say The Harmony Hotel in Costa Rica is my kinda place. It pretty much sounds like paradise. Eat. Sleep. Relax. Play. “They say The Harmony Hotel is the perfect place to get in tune with your natural rhythm.” Yes please.

If this smoothie is the type of fare they are serving up at The Harmony Hotel in Costa Rica, then I would be more than happy to eat there. I can only imagine what other amazing food and drink they have to offer. Local, seasonal food. 80% of the foods served at their Juice Bar are from their very own farm. Now that is fresh at its best.

More about the smoothie at hand. I don’t know how close this is to the exact recipe they use at The Harmony Hotel Juice Bar but it is Nat’s version inspired by her amazing experience. It contains raw cacao nibs, banana, coconut milk, coconut water, dates, and raw almond butter.

I have made smoothies similar to this one in the past but not with coconut milk and coconut water. There are so many amazing different combinations you could come up with. Raw cacao truly is amazing. It is so good and so good for you. If you didn’t know, now you know. Raw cacao can be very expensive to buy, but if you are lucky enough to live in the US you can get a great deal on amazon.

Banana Nut Butter Smoothie

3/4 cup coconut milk
1 banana
2 tablespoons raw cacao nibs
1/4 cup almond butter (raw if possible)
1/4 coconut water
1 cup ice cubes

dates to to sweeten (amount will depend on type of dates used and personal taste)
1 medjool date should be enough

Combine all the ingredients together in a blender and blend until almost smooth but still a little crunchy. Do not over blend.

Enjoy the sweet rich goodness.

Spiced Nut, Seed and Date Energy/Power Bars Recipe

These are a great mid morning or afternoon snack.  Replace that un-healthy snack such as a chocolate bar, cookie, donut, muffin etc with these delicious bars.  They are a much healthier way to tide you over to your next meal, as well as satisfy your sweet tooth without turning to a processed snack.

There is currently a 30 day challenge taking place at Moksha NDG which is where I practice  yoga on a regular basis.  While not participating in this 30 day yoga challenge myself, I have previously completed 30 day challenges on 2 separate occasions and am well aware of how demanding they can be in many ways.  Proper nutrition is always important but especially so when doing 30 days in a row of hot yoga.  These bars are a great snack for those taking part in the 30 day challenge or anyone else who does a lot of physical activity. Raspberry, Cacao, Hemp Squares Recipe

I came across this recipe  randomly on the internet.   I was not looking for a recipe.  I was just browsing around and the next thing I knew I was staring at a delicious recipe for chocolate raspberry hemp squares.  They sounded rich and divine.

Coincidently,  I had some raspberries in my fridge as well as all the other pantry ingredients.  Coconut oil, agave syrup, hemp seeds, raw cacao powder are all ingredients anyone with a whole foods kitchen should keep on hand at all times. Continue reading

Raw Cacao, Almond Butter, Hemp Seed Smoothie Recipe

This is a great smoothie when you are hungry and craving a sweet treat.  Just because you are craving something sweet doesn’t mean that you have to turn to something unhealthy.

Hemp seeds are a complete protein as well as a source of healthy essential fats. Raw Cacao nibs are one of the worlds best sources of antioxidants.

What this means is that not only is this smoothie a delicious treat, it is good for you. Continue reading

Spinach Hummus

Happy St-Patrick's day. Here is a classic recipe for you to try turned green. Everything is better green, not only on St-Patrick's day. Well that's usually how I feel anyways.

Hummus. I don't think I know anyone who doesn't love hummus. Except maybe my friend who grew up with a health food nut dad who forced him to eat tahini on toast as a child.  I think he was slighlty traumatised by this experience and avoids anything with tahini in it at all costs.

No matter what your daily diet consists of chances are you like hummus.  If you have never tried it., what are you waiting for? If you don't like hummus I don't think your eating the right kind.
