Having a well stocked kitchen pantry is essential. It gives you flexibility in the kitchen and helps you to be more creative. For those who love to follow a recipe, it becomes much easier when your kitchen pantry is well stocked. You are also much more likely to eat a healthy diet on a regular basis if your kitchen is filled with the right foods.
Today I share the contents of my pantry. I don’t always have all these ingredients on hand, and this is by no means a complete list. However, I have included quite a wide variety of foods.
Run through the list and see what you already have, and don’t have. Then, make a list of which items you think will get the most use, and make those the first new additions to your healthy pantry. You may want to switch some of what you do have for healthier versions/options. The transition will be gradual and eventually your new healthy whole foods will crowd out the processed/refined foods.
If you are lucky enough to live in the United States you can buy many of these foods on amazon.com. They have quite a large selection and most of the time great prices. If the quantity is too much for you, think about sharing (goods and cost) with some friends.

My friend, Nathalie, who happens to be one of my favourite yoga teachers, just returned from a yoga training in Costa Rica where she stayed at The Harmony Hotel. Nat and I are always talking and sharing juices and smoothies. I walked into the studio and was greeted by Nat. She extended one arm out over the reception desk, mason jar in hand. “Kieran, you need to try this”. It was a smoothie she had discovered at The Juice Bar at at the Harmony Hotel.
After checking out their website a little bit I can safely say The Harmony Hotel in Costa Rica is my kinda place. It pretty much sounds like paradise. Eat. Sleep. Relax. Play. “They say The Harmony Hotel is the perfect place to get in tune with your natural rhythm.” Yes please.
If this smoothie is the type of fare they are serving up at The Harmony Hotel in Costa Rica, then I would be more than happy to eat there. I can only imagine what other amazing food and drink they have to offer. Local, seasonal food. 80% of the foods served at their Juice Bar are from their very own farm. Now that is fresh at its best.
I have made smoothies similar to this one in the past but not with coconut milk and coconut water. There are so many amazing different combinations you could come up with. Raw cacao truly is amazing. It is so good and so good for you. If you didn’t know, now you know. Raw cacao can be very expensive to buy, but if you are lucky enough to live in the US you can get a great deal on amazon.
Banana Nut Butter Smoothie
3/4 cup coconut milk
2 tablespoons raw cacao nibs
1/4 cup almond butter (raw if possible)
1/4 coconut water
1 cup ice cubes
dates to to sweeten (amount will depend on type of dates used and personal taste)
1 medjool date should be enough
Combine all the ingredients together in a blender and blend until almost smooth but still a little crunchy. Do not over blend.
Enjoy the sweet rich goodness.
